About
Mike Bell
"I teach GCSE Science and A-level Critical Thinking in a UK state comprehensive school.

We, as teachers, are bombarded by advice and directives, but little is based on reliable evidence.  I decided to try to find out if there was reliable evidence about teaching which we could use to improve lessons.

I have been amazed to discover that much of this knowledge already exists.  There are two main sources: neuroscience and classroom experience.  However, it is either hidden in neuroscience textbooks, education journals or masked by the writings of the latest guru or government edict.

All the brain-based material I present in the workshops can be found in scientific textbooks and research papers.  I have attempted an honest distillation:  leaving out as much jargon as I can and simplifying the model of the brain to make it accessible to teachers and parents.

Having done this, I looked for the implications for teachers and parents. I was surprised to find that not only are they more or less the same as those identified by classroom-based research, but also fit with advice from successful TV programs such as "Supernanny".  With completely different approaches giving the same answer, we can be more confident in the conclusions.
