The number of organisations in the field of education which aim to provide evidence-based advice is growing.

for school action
The Institute for Effective Education at York University is "working to communicate research on effective practice as widely as possible and build support for evidence-based education".
Their Coalition for Evidence-based Education is an alliance of researchers, policy makers and practitioners who share an interest in reforming the way research evidence is used in policy and practice.  They produce Better magazine with evidence-based advice for teachers and a Best Evidence Encyclopaedia.

for community action
The Social Science Research Unit at the Dartington Trust aims to "..help communities and children’s services agencies to use research evidence in their decision making."

They provide advice on interventions aimed at young people at risk in the community, but base the advice on the results of randomised, controlled trials, not simply the evaluation of their own methods.
What counts as "evidence"?

Both these organisations agree that we cannot rely on the results of one or two small scale studies.

Almost any intervention, implemented with enthusiasm over a short period of time will show a positive effect.

Reliable evidence needs:
  • large sample size
  • control groups
  • longer time scale (eg, more than 12 weeks)
  • meta-study comparisons with other studies.
